Toasting the Pecans

Toasting your pecans enhances their natural nuttiness and deepens the flavor profile. This will help infuse that pecan flavor into your bourbon better than if they were raw.

To toast pecans, preheat your oven to 350°F. Spread the pecan halves evenly on a baking sheet and toast for 7-10 minutes. Keep a close eye on them and give the pan a shake every few minutes. They can go from golden brown to burnt fairly quickly. You’ll know they’re ready when they’re fragrant and a slightly darker brown.

What type of Bourbon Should I use?

A good, middle of the shelf bourbon is perfect for this recipe. You don’t need anything too fancy or expensive, since the toasted pecans will transform the flavor. However, you don’t want anything too cheap either, so that you can drink it neat if you prefer.

I recommend Buffalo Trace or Maker’s Mark– Logan’s favorite “middle of the shelf” options. But feel free to use what you like or have on hand!

Start by toasting your pecans. Allow them to cool completely before adding to a jar or any airtight glass container. Add a cinnamon stick, and pour in your bourbon until all the pecans are covered. Store in a dark area like the pantry for 7-10 days. You can shake or stir it every couple of days to help infuse the flavor. Give it a taste! If you can taste the nuttiness from the toasted pecans, your infused bourbon is ready.

Strain the bourbon through a fine-mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth to remove the pecans and any residue. Pour the infused bourbon into a clean bottle, and store it in a cool, dark place.
