Ahhhh, sweet summertime. The sun is high in the sky, the air is hot, and a sense of freedom tingles through our bones. As a born summer chaser, this has always been my favorite time of year. While I appreciate the cool breezes of spring, the falling leaves of autumn, and the coziness and closeness of winter, Summer always brings a certain comfort. Add in a dash of adventure and a sprinkle of excitement, and the days ahead are sure to leave you wanting more.
This Summer at kirstenturk.com, we’re unplugging and taking it back to the late 90’s / early 00’s where the main food groups were ice cream sandwiches and freeze pops, you went everywhere by bike, and the only evidence of the summer was from a polaroid or disposable camera that you wouldn’t see the pictures of until September. Our fingers felt permanently pruned, the summer reading list was slowly getting crossed off, and life was lived under the sun and stars.
A day full of slip ‘n slide-ing was followed by an evening bonfire making s’mores and telling ghost stories. Things were simpler, rules were looser and being inside was reserved for rainy days or the flickers of a street light turning on and letting us know it’s time to head home.
Even in adulthood, Summer feels less structured and a little more carefree than the rest of the seasons. Since this is the last summer in my twenties, I plan on making the most of that feeling. Our freeze pops have maybe been replaced by Summer cocktails, but we still enjoy a good s’more from time to time.
This Summer on the blog, we’re focusing on 90’s inspired Summer content. I’m sharing some of my favorite Summer recipes from childhood, more Summer cocktails, easy appetizers for grazing and some simple vegetarian and pescatarian inspired grilling.
Maybe if we spend a little time remembering all of the things we loved about Summers past, unplugged from our technology and got outside more often than not, Summer 2024 might just turn into one of those Summers our future selves feel a sense of nostalgia towards.
Happy Summer!
